Even though they are one of the smaller pieces in Point of Sale (PoS) equipment systems, the receipt printer is no less important than any other part. There are two main technologies of printers, impact and thermal. Impact receipt printers are generally less expensive whilst thermal receipt printers tend to be faster.

Impact Receipt Printer:
Advantages of an impact receipt printer include lower initial cost and 2-ply paper printing. Disadvantages include slower printing, noise, lower print quality and the ribbon needs replacing. More moving parts can yield a higher probability of repair need as well.

Disadvantages include receipts can turn black if exposed to heat, receipt paper is more expensive (but price offset by not requiring ribbon), and it does not print on 2-ply paper. Most software programs can automatically print 2 receipts making this disadvantage minor.
